How to Eat Better Without Dieting — Why Protein and Fibre Matter
By Caroline Grey, Founder of Craft Your Body

Most of the women I speak to have tried every diet going. They've counted, cut out, restricted and started again on Monday more times than they can remember. And here's the thing — diets do work, for a while. What they don't do is last.
My approach is different. It isn't about rules or foods you're never allowed again. It's about building better choices, one meal at a time, so that eating well becomes something you do without thinking — and two nutrients sit at the heart of it: protein and fibre.
Why protein matters
- It's the most satiating nutrient — it keeps you feeling fuller for longer, so you're not grazing all afternoon.
- It takes longer to digest, which helps steady your energy and blood sugar.
- It's the building block for building, repairing and maintaining muscle — which matters more than ever as oestrogen falls.
- It supports strong bones, healthy skin, hair and nails, and your immune system.
A good portion at every meal — around 30g — is a helpful target. Think eggs, Greek yoghurt, chicken, fish, lean meat, tofu, beans and lentils, or a scoop of protein powder in your oats.
Why fibre matters
- It keeps digestion moving along and helps you stay regular.
- It adds bulk and slows digestion, so meals keep you satisfied for longer.
- It feeds the good bacteria in your gut, which play a part in mood, immunity and how your body stores fat.
- It helps balance blood sugar and supports healthy cholesterol and heart health.
Most of us don't get anywhere near enough. Vegetables, fruit, beans, lentils, oats, wholegrains, nuts and seeds all count — the more variety, the better for your gut. If you'd like to understand more, read why a healthy gut is key to midlife health.
Better together
When you build a meal around protein and fibre, it naturally becomes more filling and more balanced. You feel satisfied, your energy stays steady, and the cravings that used to send you to the biscuit tin mid-afternoon quieten down. Add some healthy fats and good-quality carbohydrates and you've got a plate that fuels your training, protects your muscle and keeps you going.
A word of honesty here: most women have no real idea how much protein, fibre or overall food is on their plate — and that's completely normal, because nobody ever taught us. So when you're working towards results, there's usually a period of tracking and weighing your food. It isn't a diet and it isn't forever. It's an education — learning what portions look like and what's actually in your meals, so that in time you can make confident choices on your own.
More freedom, not more rules
Emotional freedom around food doesn't mean eating whatever you want or having a bit of what you fancy. It means understanding your food. When you know what fuels your body, what supports your training and what moves you towards the results you want, you stop relying on willpower, guilt or the next diet to tell you what to do. You make the choice because you understand why it matters.
That's what my coaching is built on: education, not restriction. When you're focused on results, that does mean being honest about the things that hold you back. Alcohol is one of them, and I often ask clients to take a break from it for a period while we build the foundations. (If you'd like to know why, read Alcohol in Midlife — What's Really Going On Beneath That Glass of Wine.) Once you understand how your body responds, the right choices stop feeling like a sacrifice and start feeling like yours. That's the goal: a way of eating that's informed, intentional and built to last.
Where to start
- Start with breakfast. Try my 5 balanced breakfasts, each with around 30g protein.
- Make lunch work harder. My quick and balanced lunches show you the simple formula.
- Batch cook once, eat well all week. My autumn chillies are packed with protein, vegetables and fibre.
- Add, don't subtract. Instead of cutting things out, ask: where's my protein, and where's my fibre?
