Why Your Energy Falls in Midlife — and How to Get It Back

Sleep, stress and recovery can make a real difference to how you feel. If you've found yourself running on empty in midlife — tired when you wake, flagging mid-afternoon, yet somehow wide awake at night — you're not alone, and it's not just "getting older".

In my experience, low energy in midlife rarely comes down to one thing. It's usually a combination of a full life, a stressed body, the wrong kind of effort and not enough rest. The good news is that once you understand why your energy has dropped, you can do something about it.

    Why energy falls in midlife

    1

You're spinning more plates than ever

Midlife is often the busiest season of a woman's life. Career, children (sometimes teenagers, sometimes grown-ups who still need you), ageing parents, a home to run, maybe a business too. Every plate needs a little bit of you, and somewhere along the way you end up at the bottom of your own list. Tiredness isn't a personal failing — it's often the very understandable result of giving out more than you're putting back in.

    2

Stress keeps your cortisol switched on

Cortisol is your stress hormone, and in short bursts it's useful — it gets you up in the morning and through a deadline. The problem is when stress never really switches off. Chronically high cortisol disrupts sleep, drives cravings for sugar and quick energy, encourages fat to settle around the middle and leaves you feeling wired but tired. As oestrogen and progesterone fluctuate through perimenopause, many women find they cope with stress less well than they used to, so the same busy life suddenly feels much harder.

Doing more exercise without fuelling properly

This is one I see all the time. The weight creeps on in midlife, so the natural response is to do more — more classes, more running, more steps — and eat less at the same time. It feels like the right thing to do, but it's a recipe for exhaustion. Your body reads it as another stress, cortisol rises, recovery suffers and you can end up losing muscle rather than fat. More isn't always better. The right training, properly fuelled with enough protein, carbohydrates and healthy fats, will give you far more energy than punishing yourself on an empty tank.

Sleep gets pushed to the bottom of the list

When the day is full, sleep is usually the first thing we sacrifice — scrolling late because it's the only time that feels like yours, or lying awake with a busy mind. Add night sweats and hormonal changes and good sleep can feel out of reach. But sleep is when your body repairs, balances hormones and resets your appetite. Without it, everything else — training, food choices, mood, patience — gets harder. Protecting your sleep isn't a luxury; it's the foundation your energy is built on.

    Why energy matters so much

Energy is what everything else runs on. When you have it, you train well, make better food choices, have more patience with the people you love and actually enjoy your life rather than just getting through it. When it's gone, even the simplest healthy habits feel like a mountain. That's why I always look at energy first with the women I coach — before we worry about the scales.

    Where to start

    • Put yourself back on the list. Block out time for your training, a walk or ten quiet minutes like any other appointment.
    • Fuel your activity. Eat enough, with protein at every meal — don't try to out-exercise an empty plate.
    • Train smarter, not more. Two to three strength sessions plus daily walking will do more for your energy than exhausting yourself every day.
    • Protect your sleep. A consistent bedtime, phone out of the bedroom and a calm wind-down routine.
    • Bring stress down daily. Breathwork, fresh air, laughter and saying no a little more often all help turn cortisol down.

    How I help

This is exactly why my coaching never starts with "do more, eat less". Together we look at your whole week — your workload, stress, sleep, training and food — and build a plan that gives you energy back rather than taking more away. Sustainable habits that fit your real life, not a quick fix you can't keep up.
